Why is there both a service fee and a delivery fee?
They are two different DoorDash charges. The service fee supports operation of the platform. The delivery fee helps cover costs associated with getting the order to you. DoorDash does not say that the delivery fee is passed directly to the Dasher, so it should not be treated as a substitute for a tip.
A promotion or DashPass benefit may reduce one charge without eliminating the other. “$0 delivery fee” therefore does not mean the complete order has no platform fees.

Do not calculate the fee from the restaurant’s in-store menu price. DoorDash’s U.S. consumer terms state that item prices on the platform may differ from the merchant’s own prices. The DoorDash subtotal is the relevant figure shown in the cart.
What is the small order fee?
DoorDash says a small order fee may apply when the order subtotal is below a certain amount. The threshold and fee are displayed for the order. It is not safe to assume one nationwide minimum.
Adding an item solely to remove the fee is not automatically a saving. Compare the final totals:
- Original cart: subtotal plus the small order fee and all other charges.
- Larger cart: new subtotal without the small order fee, plus recalculated service fee, tax, and other charges.
If the extra item costs more than the fee reduction, the larger cart costs more. Buy it only if you actually want it or the final total is lower.
Does DashPass remove the service fee?
No—not necessarily. DoorDash says DashPass members receive a $0 delivery fee and a reduced service fee on eligible orders that meet the displayed subtotal minimum at DashPass-eligible merchants. That wording means the service fee can remain.
DoorDash currently lists standard U.S. DashPass pricing at $9.99 per month or $96 annually, with separate student pricing. Prices, taxes, promotions, and partner benefits can change. Check the membership screen in your account before subscribing.
Estimate value using your own recent orders:
Monthly benefit = delivery-fee reductions + service-fee reductions + usable credits or discounts − membership cost
Count only eligible orders you would have placed anyway. A membership does not save money if it encourages enough additional ordering to exceed the fee reductions.
Why can the restaurant price be different?
DoorDash’s U.S. consumer terms say prices displayed through the service may differ from prices offered by the merchant or on another website. Depending on the arrangement, a merchant or DoorDash may set the displayed price.
That means the difference between ordering in person and ordering through DoorDash can include both:
- a different item subtotal; and
- service, delivery, small-order, distance, express, regulatory, tax, and tip lines.
Compare like with like: same items, sizes, modifiers, delivery address, promotion, and tip. A pickup price on one platform is not a valid comparison with a delivered price on another.
How to lower the final DoorDash cost
- Check the itemized total. Never rely on the restaurant card’s “$0 delivery fee” label alone.
- Compare pickup and delivery. Pickup can remove delivery-related charges, but verify the service fee and item prices.
- Compare the merchant’s direct channel. Confirm the restaurant’s official site or phone number before sharing payment details.
- Test the small-order threshold. Compare totals before and after adding an item rather than assuming the larger order saves money.
- Apply eligible promotions. Read the merchant, subtotal, customer, payment-method, and expiration restrictions.
- Evaluate DashPass from actual orders. Compare recent eligible savings with the current membership price.
- Check another platform carefully. Use identical items and delivery details because menu prices and fees can differ.

Why did DoorDash charge $9.99?
